Sunnyslope

This area of Phoenix as it appears on this map comprises the area from Cactus Road to the north, Central Avenue to the west, Glendale Avenue to the south and the 51 Freeway to the east.  The area of Sunnyslope proper is about 7 miles north of downtown Phoenix and is known as the community “Where the Mountains Meet the Valley”.  William R. Norton founded the Sunnyslope area in 1911 when he developed the first Sunny Slope subdivision.  An interesting article about Sunnyslope and its history can be found here.

Some of the distinct neighborhoods in this area include Las Bonitas Alturas, Canyon Hills, Lincoln View, Highland Hills, Encino Estates, Point Loma, Dreamy Draw Homes, Stony Ridge, Sunnyslope, Century Estates, Warren Heights, Ocotillo Hills, Desert Haven, Pointe Tapatio and Sunland Heights.  The Sunnyslope neighborhood, for example, features ranch style homes built in the late 1960s, many of which have been remodeled and which feature lush green lawns.   Las Bonitas Alturas features smaller single family homes in a variety of home styles, many remodeled, near Point Tapatio and the mountain preserve.  Ocotillo Hills is home to some midcentury modern homes designed by Phil Fagan, as well as other notable home styles from that era and later.

Condominium complexes in this area include Vista at the Peak Condominium,Ventana Condo, Sundance Condo, Canterra at Squaw Peak, Ruthgate Condominiums, Mountain View Manor Condominium, Pointe Resort Condo at Tapatio Cliffs and Villas Sunrise.

Things To Do:  Areas to enjoy outdoor activities in this area include the North Mountain Park, Piestewa Park, Sunnyslope Park, Palma Park.  Golfers will enjoy the Lookout Mountain Golf Club. Shopping centers in this area of Sunnyslope include Marketplace at Central, Royal Palo Verde Shopping Center, and the Greenway Village Shopping Center.

Schools:  The major school districts servicing this area of Sunnyslope are Madison Elementary District and the Paradise Valley Unified School District, and some schools are Larkspur Elementary, Desert View School, Madison Heights Elementary, Madison SIMIS Elementary School, Sunnyslope School, Shea Middle School, Shadow Mountain High School, and Sunnyslope High School.
